Born in Havana, Cuba, Felix Sama, at age 2, followed his family to Chicago. Raised in Cook County he spent his first 10 years in Chicago where he got his first taste of the Hip-Hop and Break Dancing revolution. By the time his family relocated again to Miami Florida music was deep in his soul.
Wanting to perfect his art and become successful in the music industry, Sama disembarked the cruise ship and went to Miami Dade College to major in Radio & TV Broadcasting. Following, he attended one of the music industries most respected schools Full Sail Recording for the Arts. Immediately after his studies, the determined Sama started working for Miami’s radio station Hot 105 where he remained for 4 years as their star DJ mixer.
Sama’s restlessness directed him to Miami’s top radio station Power 96. During his remarkable 9 year stay he went from mix DJ, to over night On-Air DJ, and finally to Co-Host, Co-Producer and star mixer of Power 96’s morning show. When asked what was his biggest lesson at Power 96 Sama states “The main lesson was to never get too comfortable, always stay hungry and try to get your own thing going”. Sama maintained top-ratings working morning drive shows and performing on his own “mix” shows. He was quickly approached by HBC Broadcast station Salsa 98 to launch The Street Mix show from 9pm till 10pm which consisted of a mix of Reggaeton (Latin Reggae) and Hip Hop. A musical combination that was unheard of at the time. Quickly Sama was considered one of the pioneers of what now is recognized in the general market as Latin Hip Hop and the Godfather of many Reggaeton artists. Whom he advised and supported during the trialing commencement years of this new music genre. Therefore, it was only natural for Clear Channel’s MEGA 94.9, its first ever Latino Urban radio station to call upon Sama to sphere head their morning show THE MEGA FLOW MORNING SHOW. Sama is not only an on-air personality, he also possesses technical skills that range from radio mixer to board operator, enabling him to produce his own features and segments.
Never skipping a beat between his radio gigs, Sama also has directed his attention to producing and mixing records. He has recently collaborated with Latin Grammy Winner Nestor Torres, Grammy nominee and star of the Off-Broadway Play Celia the Musical – Xiomara, Latin Hip Hop pioneers Don Dinero, Magic Juan, Fulanito, Gemstar & Mato. He re-mixed Jamz compilation album featuring some of today’s hottest Latin Reggae artists including Ivy Queen, Daddy Yankee, Don Nelson and Trivales, not to mention his countless LIVE, on-air remixes of major artists like Voltio’s Chulin.. Sama’s work with Little Joe Records artists 2 Live Crew is nothing short of legendary. He has also aligned himself with Shalim, from the renowned Emilio Estefan camp of artists as well as Latin sensation Monchy y Alexandra, from J&N Records, featuring the re-mix track
“Te Quiero Igual Que Ayer.” He produced So South’s hit “Chico Snap” and co-produced their music video. His twelve independently released mix CDs are still on high demand.
In a whirl wind of events and projects Sama also finds the time to teach up-and-coming DJs the mixing and scratching skills they need to become professional DJs.one of the Founders of THE RHYTHM CITY DJ SKOOL Sama is not only a mentor to these up-and-coming DJs but, in addition, teaches these beginning DJs the art of mixing and scratching from mobile to club to radio. In 2004 Sama released an instructural DJ DVD Latin DJ Techinques: Miami Style {Warner Brothers} Continuously wanting to grow and expand his artistic horizons, television was only a natural transition for Sama “I wanted to be seen rather than just heard” states Sama. Telemundo/Universal Television’ s Urban network mun2 was smart enough to grab this multi-talented artist and gave him his own show “The Upbeat Show” Soon thereafter he Co-Hosted numerous special events, and other mun2 shows like Fusion, and Chat. Internationally renowned DJ Felix Sama was one of the FIRST hosts and star mix DJ of mun2 best rated show “The Roof”. Not leaving his acting chops behind, Sama studied at THE ACTING STUDIO in the Conservatory Training and Improvisation Program. He has done numerous commercials, and was featured in the Lion Gate’s film “Seniorita Justice”
Seeking new artistic challenges and wanting to merge all of his talents, of DJing, producing, acting and hosting, Sama has just penned a musical and interactive show – Latino Block Party. LBP is an innovative Latino urban musical – a LURBAN MUSICAL –he uses tropical and Hip Hop music, freestyle rapping, Latin and hip hop dancing, the bond of childhood friendships, and a universal sense of neighborhood spirituality to reignite hopes and dreams to a defunct, community.
